Build your personal safety plan

People I trust. Words I can use. Options for getting home.

Make a plan that fits your life. Choose someone you can reach, a backup option, and words that feel natural to you. You can skip anything and change your plan whenever you want.

A plan gives you options. You do not need a perfect plan to deserve help.

Nothing saved yet.
Where is my plan kept?

Your plan is stored in this browser on this device. Someone with access to this browser may be able to view it. Clearing browser data may remove it. The Becoming Project does not send your plan anywhere: it is not uploaded, shared or used to improve lessons.

Step 1

Choose my people

Who could you contact when you want support or help leaving?

First person

Backup person

Choose someone who respects your choices. A friend, sibling, roommate, parent, or another trusted person can be part of your plan.

Have we talked about being part of my plan?

Call and text buttons open your phone’s own app with nothing sent until you choose to. The Becoming Project never contacts anyone for you.

Step 2

Agree on a code word

What could you say or text when you want help without explaining everything?

Talk about the meaning beforehand. Decide what your person should do if they cannot respond.

Step 3

Choose a way home

Choose options you can realistically use. Check availability before relying on them.

Step 4

Keep support information handy

Check details on your campus’s official website. Before sharing personal information, you can ask about confidentiality and reporting limits.

Step 5

Choose words that sound like me

My words

    Suggested starting phrases

More words from the Becoming Project lessons

You can change these words. You do not owe anyone a longer explanation.

        Step 6

        Practice one moment

        Keep your plan current

Your plan can change as your life changes. Come back when a contact, ride, or campus service changes.

Open my plan Review my options

        My plan at a glance

        Was this useful?

Optional. Your answer is counted anonymously and never includes anything from your plan.

        If something is happening now

Call 911. Then tell a trusted adult. Stay with the person and follow the dispatcher’s instructions.

Something on this site worried you, or a lesson or answer seems wrong or unsafe? Report a concern. Leave out names and personal details. This is not an emergency line; if someone is in danger, call 911.
